"... The filing for model number A2304 offer no real major details about the model other than what is already known or expected, such as its appearance. A photograph showing the test setup for the rack-mount Mac Pro shows it to look very close to the version briefly displayed in an image on the WWDC stage, ..."

The FCC label picture like the A1991 filing as "Assembled in China" on the example label. Either indicative that Apple switched after filing (lines up with other rumor reports) or has two assembly points ( China one is being kept on the far "down low" for political dog and pony show purposes. )

[ this story seemed to think the A1991 at the FCC was "new". That leaked a while back. But the FCC listing is linked.

If the tower cleared in late October than there may be a month between general availability for these (if Apple applied in advance for them to "pop put" from cloaked mode about a month apart. ). With the long delay maybe they'll surprise and pull it off without some large scarcity "problem" that will force single tracking on models for a while.

These racks can probably sell to macOS hosting sites at 256GB quite well since only need to host the virtualizer base on the primary drive. ( the rest can be loaded off the SAN with migration and failover supported.)

the two "top" TB ports moved to the forward edge and the power button presumably near the power on indicator light. (only would need a small motherboard mod to that. Or it is rerouted in the container. ).

Gawd that's tall - is it 5U or 6U?

According to the dimensions that Appleinsider dug out of the docs, it is pragmatically 5U .

This is really far more so a rack friendly box around the same tower internals . It isn‘t optimized for rack density . It just is not ‘rack hostile’ like the tower case . It is probably just about as quiet as the tower version for example ( same components and same physical fans ..... probably lead to the same amount of noise . Is that going to buy much in a noisy data center? Nope. But it is better than no rack product at all. ).

Are the Mac mini collocation folks going to dump all of their minis for these? Nope. Some maybe if their virtualization stack is up to it . The MP 2013 could hold up on density grounds agaIan’s these too . ( so would not be surprising some small minority was still buying them for racks provisioned for that form factor. That is such a small group Apple could just take that off the generic order page months back. )

5U shouldn’t be a problem to put into a cart ( on wheels ) also with another 5-6U of stuff.

Yeh - If they did a decent server, we'd probably jump. Otherwsie waiting for next gen proliant. That is if Randy Walton and Jade Alquisola from Apple exec liason actually make good on their promises to replace my dead iphone. Sept to Dec is too long to wait.

"Coming Soon" not all that surprised. I suspect in the price shock carnage they are hoping folks don't notice they will blow through that "coming this Fall" deadline.

$6,499 and probably still getting the minimal component spec. $500 just for the rack case and motherboard modifications for socket & button placement.
