Hello all,

Shot in the dark here but, I use a Mac Pro 3,1 (2008) with FCP 7 and have been experiencing some upsetting issues with the entire system and machine freezing and becoming unresponsive.

The issue has only been taking place while I am editing or playing back HD clips or video.

After reading a few forums I’m suspecting the issue is the graphics card. It is currently a stock ATI Radeon 2600.

I only use this machine as editor, with 10.5.and would like to replace the GPU if that is indeed the problem.

Any thoughts or suggestions on a compatible GPU card?

Thank you!

Grab a second GPU and test it out. The Nvidia GeForce GT 120s from roundabouts the same generation Mac Pro are dirt cheap on eBay.

My Pro was having freezing issues recently and it turned out to be a GPU problem too.

Thank you for advice!
I’m real close to buying a test GPU but, strangest thing is, this all started happening when I switched to new headphones. When I playback and editing without headphones and just use the built in speaker, there’s no freezing or crashing...

I pulled the GPU and RAM out, cleaned them and reset the SCM. So far everything is running tip top shape. I’m almost afraid to plug my headphones back in... but I’m certainly going need to in order to mix.

Any other thoughts?
Has this happened to you or anyone else you may know?

Thanks

Running a hardware test might reveal something wrong with the audio system.

I'd still try a tester GPU. An issue with the GPU can manifest itself in weird ways. Mine would run graphics-heavy stuff totally fine but only freeze afterward when doing casual web browsing.

Hello again,

my current situation has gone from bad to worse...

I attempted to run an AHT but, the mouse continues to freeze each time. The keyboard remains responsive enough to run the test but, it continuously gets hung up after 20 seconds in... The furthest test ran “8 minutes and 20 seconds” after 30 minutes but then became u responsive.

The only message I am getting is that “1 has passed” then the test essentially hangs...

Could this mean it’s the RAM and not the GPU?

Thank you!

Couldn't tell you either way. A GPU is still easier to test than RAM. Buy a cheap one and put it in.

Sounds good!

*update
I was able to run a successful AHT on my machine and it came back with “no trouble found.”

Looks like I’ll be buying a GPU in a last stitch effort to save this guy.

Great news!

purchased a new ATI Radeon HD 4870 GPU and installed it into my Mac Pro 3,1.

Eicca, you where absolutely right! My stock GPU was shot. My Mac Pro has been running solid for two weeks now with no freezing or crashing.

Thank you so much again for your help!
