Mac pro crashing HS 10.13.4 + nvidia web driver

Hello all,

Well a weird situation happened some days ago.

On my mac pro 5,1, i've swapped my 970 gtx (non flashed) with a 1060 GTX (non flashed) somethng like 3 weeks ago, but the nvidia web driver stayed the same 387.10.10.10.30.106 (pfffiiuuuu what a pain.. thanks nvidia..). On bootcamp everything is flawless and games are stable and speedy.

but on High sierra it's another story :

Anyway here it is : right driver with the right HS version. All is good on this side BUT

-HS is crashing A LOT.. and i mean "windows like" a lot. Which NEVER EVER happened before.
When it crashs, it forces quit all your applications displaying a sudden black screen and BAM! instantly kicks you to the login screen !!! any unsaved work is lost of course ! nice !

So i've opened the console to show what these crashs were all about, it appears to be related to NV driver (nvidia) *see pics*

So i've tried to swap to the standard driver (OSX one) but it never ocured to me that when you are on the OSX driver your GTX cannot display any picture through HDMI... VGA is good. But HDMI is a nogo. Why ?

So that leads me to 2 questions :

-After some research i've found that quite some people has a random-kick-to-login issue... and probably related to nvidia driver as well. As anyone found a way to prevent such a bug, which is quite f**king annoying to say the least !!!

-Why a non flashed GTX cannot display any picture through HDMI with the standard OSX driver ??? VGA ok, i assume Display port is ok (i dont have a display port cable to test right now), but HDMI is nogo. Why ?

If anyone can shed some light on this, i'd be really grateful because it's my working machine and as of now.. i can't do something serious on it for more than 5 minutes tops.

Previous cases of this were due to more than one GPU installed (with one being flashed, I think). Do you just have the 1060 installed?

Indeed i have a 2600XT (original apple card) installed, for bootscreen purpose. Ive mentionned it on my sig but i will edit my post to reflect something more accurate.

I have to say that, with my gtx 970 installed as of 3 weeks ago, i've never experienced this issue (and i've been using this rig with the 2600XT and the 970GTX since the beginning of this year).

And well, even with the nvidia driver the screen stays black on the display port channel of my screen.. i have to switch to vga or hdmi to have picture. Which raises another question : why display port doesn't work, even with the nvidia web driver.. ??

What make is your 1080? Does it have the same port layout as the reference 1080 (which I think is 3x DP, 1x HDMI, 1x DVI)? If the port layout is different than the reference card then some ports may not be usable on macOS. Did you try all the DP outputs?

I don't think we have determined what specific combinations of cards and macOS version are triggering this bug. I think you are correct though that it's got something to do with the NVIDIA web drivers, but so far we've seen it happen with two NVIDIA cards (one EFI/flashed, one unflashed) and one NVIDIA card and one AMD card.

It would be interesting if you put your 970 back in (with the 2600XT still installed), do the crashes stop? That would imply that not every NVIDIA card is affected.

it has 2 DVI-D, 1 HDMI, 1 DP.

Oops, sorry my mistake. However, the 1060 reference design has the same port array as the 1080 (3x DP 1.4, 1x HDMI 2.0b, and 1x DVI). So since your port layout is different, unfortunately that means certain ports won't work, even though you have the web drivers installed.

Hmm maybe that relates to the crashing issue too. Now I wonder if the other people experiencing that bug had non-reference design NVIDIA cards.

What make is your 970?

Unfortunately, it happens to me too, with a 1030 GT. I've been like this for 2 months and still can't find a solution (more than using AMD cards)

If it fails, I'll put the 970 back and test (but I'm pretty sure it will run smoothly). And last test: I have a second 1060, an asus this time. I'll try this by swapping the gigabyte one an test.

It is very likely that the problem is using two graphics cards, because another user had previously reported the same problem when using two graphics cards at the same time.

indeed.. well i'll try to narrow things down a little bit. Maybe it's related to some brand/models when paired to an original mac card (cause i didn't have any of that kind of trouble with my gtx 970). I'll do some tests right now.

Okay after a few extensive tests it appears, as bookemdano said, to be related to 2 cards configuration. That is for sure now.
But which configuration is causing problem ? It appears to be when you have 1 mac edition card and one Nvidia PC card (but only some models seems to be causing this).
To narrow things down i'll try my second 1060GTX (Asus non flashed) with the 2600XT mac edition and get back for the results.

Update: Your macOS 10.13.4 is rev. 17E199, the last web driver is for 17E202. So I guess you have the right driver.

Maybe you should update to macOS 10.13.6, a lot of bugs were fixed.

Update: Your macOS 10.13.4 is rev. 17E199, the last web driver is for 17E202. So I guess you have the right driver.

Maybe you should update to macOS 10.13.6, a lot of bugs were fixed.

I updated my macOS and still have the same problem, even with simple things like opening Mission Control, it causes WindowServer to crash and send me back to the login screen. It is worth mentioning that glitches also appear in windows very often.

It seems as if it's something "rare" or trivial. I do not think so.

I think the problem is when using a graphics card with Mac EFI and a non-flashed card at the same time.

Well I think maybe it only applies to flashed NVIDIA cards that require the web driver. Or at the very least it doesn't seem to apply to the stock GT120 + AMD RX 580 combo.

Maybe it's when the EFI card is in the bottom slot?

Very interesting. I have the same issue, being kicked to the login screen every now and then. I have two graphics cards in the Mac as well: a GT120 (the one that come with the mac) and a GTX 960.
Also, video playback often stops working in web-browsers. Posted about this, before I read this thread:

Update:
After removing the GT120 (running with the GTX 960 only) it works fine. I don't have boot screen of cause. But I am keeping the GT120 close in case of emergency.

I don't know if this is related or just coincidental, but since I installed the GT 1030 with Nvidia's Web Drivers I also get Kernel Panics occasionally.

I have a CMP mid 2010 5,1 that has just started having the Windowserver crash discussed here since I upgraded OS to 10.13.6 yesterday.
I have had a (PC version, not flashed) EVGA GTX970 4GB installed for 2 years or so under Yosemite 10.10. The original Mac Radeon HD 5770 1GB has been installed next to it for those 2 years, enabling me to see the boot screen. For the past 2 years this setup has worked flawlessly using the appropriate nVidia Webdrivers for Yosemite final version.
However after installing latest 10.13.6 (17G4015) with the right nVidia Webdriver (387.10.10.10.40.113), though it mainly works fine, I now get the Windowserver crashes discussed here, along with occasional graphical artefacts, usually in the hour or two after waking/booting: it then seems to calm down and the crashes stop/become much less frequent.
I understand from the above that removing the Mac Radeon card may fix this. However I thought it might be interesting to point out that my experience shows that the same hardware combination of non-flashed nVidia card and Mac EFI Radeon card worked fine for years under Yosemite with the Yosemite Webdriver from nVidia, and only fails now under High Sierra with its Webdriver.

Try using the 387.10.10.15.15.108 driver if you're looking to attempt to resolve this with High Sierra. It fixed the majority of issues many had. Unsure if this specifically was addressed or not. Does not "break" with each of the OS updates in High Sierra.

Did you mean:
387.10.10.10.40.108 or
378.10.10.10.20.108 or any other one?

Edit: I tried 387.10.10.10.40.108 which is the most recent one before my current latest one, and the installer won't let me install it, says 10.3.6 17G4015 "is not supported with this package."

387.10.10.15.15.108 is the one that was pulled by NVIDIA that included VOLTA drivers. Search the forum and you'll find the links. Been running it since release on MBP (with NVIDIA GPU) and MP5,1.
