Hello i am looking for a new mac to edit home movies that are HD from my sony camcorder

i was curious if any one knew which system i would need for doing this ?

i would want to get as much life from the computer i can since i probably wont be able to purchase another for 3+ years

the only thing that deters me from the imac is the limited amount of ram
and the possible 2+ hours encoding wait time if the imac is any thing like the first macbook pro

I would go for the base Mac Pro with lotsa RAM. A top of the line iMac is more expensive than the Mac Pro.

Absolutely.

They aren't even in the same league. The Mac Pro is much more "upgrade friendly" and future safe... With the iMac, you're basically locked with the configuration you buy (except the RAM) if you don't want to void warranty.
