When working on my MacBook Air 11 early 2015 it sometimes goes into sleeping mode. But, black screen, no reaction when tapping keys. Only lifting and lowering the display (often several times in a row) can wake it up again.
What to do ? When in the shop the problem did not reproduce of course . . :-~
