Hi all. I am upgrading my Macbook drive from 80Gb - 320Gb tomorrow, and in preparation for this I am going to create a DMG of my Macbook drive, by connecting the Macbook to my eMac, whilst the Macbook is in Target Disk mode.

What I want to know is:

### Will Disk Utility write ALL the empty space to the DMG, or just the data?

I cannot be sitting around for 6-7 hours whilst the WHOLE 80Gb of my Macbook drive is backed up to DMG; surely it will only backup the space that has data on it, and ignore the empty space?.

Please let me know, thanks.

if you are using the restore feature, free space will not be backed up, but disc utility will require that the .dmg be 80GB anyway, actually, it might ask for 90 GB or so.

SO... it will backup the used data portion, and pad the rest out as blank (effectively the same overall size as my drive?). Thanks
