MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016) black screen at start up with no sound. external. monitors work

I assume it went to sleep and the display did not wake....I am taking it in under apple care, but just wonder why is the cause. I have tried all the tricks I believe that I found online. Would be nice to have it work till I get it in the shop.

Will boot in safe mode.

One possibility is the "flexgate" problem. I thought the same thing when this happened to my 13" 2016 MBP this week; but, noticed that opening the lid half way (slowly), the screen backlight did turn on.
