Hi together,

I just wanted to ask friendly if maybe someone can give me a suggestion what’s wrong with my MacBook Pro 15 2011 early 2011 A1286. It always stucks during the booting process and the screen will stay just white. Installed on the mac is High Sierra.

When I try to start the diagnostic tool I just get the message that the System was unable to run the diagnostic. No matter I just got the diagnostic tool work over the Online Diagnostic.

When i started the extended Test I got the following error saying: 4MEM/62/40000000: 0x85136618.

So after some searches it could be the RAM, SSD or the logic board. For the first try I just unplugged the two rams and tried to start with only one RAM ( tried both ) but the error is still the same. So I’m thinking now to format the SSD and try to reinstall the OS. Also there are so many pictures I don’t want to loose. So I just wanted to ask if this can solve the problem or maybe some hints how I can solve the problem otherwise.

Thank you so much in advance.

Kind Regards

Engino

I would suspect a problem with the Radeon GPU on the motherboard. It is a known defect with the 2011 MBPs. Do a Google search for "Radeongate". The only fix is to replace the motherboard with another used motherboard that has the same eventual potential defect failure. It is better to spend your money on a newer MBP.

Booting to the white screen with Mac OS is a good sign it is the GPU. Search this forum and you will see other people with the same symptom.

I had the GPU chip replaced on my logic board and it's been perfect since.

The screen turns white at the point when it tries to load the AMD drivers afaik.

You can try use a different drive to reinstall the os but I think it's a lost cause.

Thank you both so much. I just tried it and used this one

Code:
nvram fa4ce28d-b62f-4c99-9cc3-6815686e30f9:gpu-power-prefs=%01%00%00%00

nvram boot-args="-v"

reboot

Now it’s hanging already on the boot up screen and it’s not loading. Did I forgot something ?

Unfortunately, I can't help any further as I didn't want to use a software fix so I had the GPU replaced.

Not sure if this works help: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...7-dedicated-gpu-spi-rom-modification.2102090/

Thank you so much. Now my Mac is working again :). I just turned off the GPU and installed only one Ram. Now it started and I’m making a backup of all my pictures. Now I’m hoping that my Mac will just work till the new MacBook Pro which I will buy after release.
Thanks again for all your time and help. I really appreciate it :).

Glad you got it working.

I hope it continues to work until you are able to replace it.
