It is sufficient to rerun the Post Install Patches from your bootable USB installer. This should be prepared using the latest Catalina patcher (1.2.3).
Should also suffice to run Patch Updater and then reboot, but I didn‘t use this often (I preferred to always have the latest USB installer at hand).

So if I understand it well I still need to create new bootable USB installer to be able to install patches even without reinstalling macOS. OK. My question was whether there is way to update patches without this.
I do not have much time to fiddle with it now.

It would be interesting if there would be way to update existing bootable USB installer with new patcher.

Hi @dosdude1, I wonder if (and how :)) there is a way to incorporate some kexts into the installer drive volume. That’s because I use a MacBookPro4,1 with USB 3.0 over a ExpressCard/34 card. The drivers I use are the ones from RehabMan, they are working perfectly fine in my installed Catalina 10.15.1 volume.

Would be nice to have USB 3.0 drive support, when installing or restoring from a USB flash drive, etc.

BTW, thanks to all who are contributing!

If you are hoping for using USB 3.0 to boot that approach won't work. The usb 3.0 support has to exist in the boot firmware itself.

Thanks jhowarth, would this 'bootable requirement' also apply for the dosdude Patched Installer USB drive?

In case booting won’t work, it would still be helpful, to have access to files, disk images, etc. on USB 3.0 drives, after booted from the USB Installer drive (plugged into a USB 2.0 port).

After trying to build a USB Catalina installer, unsuccessfully on two different sticks, I opted for the "install to this machine" method, took less than 10 minutes onto 256GB APFS container on a 1 TB. SSHDD, lower slot. Perfect result. I ran the Catalina 15.1.03 installer from a HFS+ SSD (10.14.3, the best Mojave for low-octane Macs) in the upper slot of the Mini3,1. (The huge TMP file vanished at reboot.)

4 days on Catalina is a pleasant surprise. SSHDD is adequate. Worth the effort. View attachment 878039
Hi, I've a question for my problem.. I've formatted my macbook pro mid 2010 and the only system that works at the moment is mojave from high sierra. Is your update made from an unsupported os version? I mean.. can i make the same on my machine? Can you give me a feedback.. I hope that I've explain my problem.. Sorry for my english...

While you might be able to boot such a patched usb installer from a usb 2.0 port to install a system drive on a usb 3.0 port, the resulting system drive on the usb 3.0 port could never boot. Only boot roms supporting particular usb 3.0 chipsets provided by Apple could do that.

Bonsoir,

I have a Belkin bluetooth 4.0 USB stick (low energy etc...).

Do I have to remove the old apple bluetooth card (BT 2.0 I suppose) from the motherboard to use the new dongle ?

Many thanks,

Serviteur,

Bonsoir,

So, I had to remove the old apple bluetooth card from the motherboard to use the new dongle...

Now, with the little Belkin usb 4.0 dongle, BT run exactly as expected !

Just for info...

Serviteur

The post install patches from The Catalina usb are also in the patch updater in your Applications utilities folder

Marco - installed Catalina 'to this machine' with the MacOS installer and Patcher 1.2.3 running from another partition with an unsupported OS (Mojave 10.14.3) on a HFS+ partition. Catalina installed perfectly on a APFS partition. This install method has worked well on two Mini3,1.

Used 'install to this machine' because after numerous attempts was unable to make a Catalina USB installer. All Mojave USB installers worked without issues. Catalina on a 2GHz.Mini.png

Yes, I understand that I can’t boot from anything external on the non-native USB 3.0 ports, that also was not the intention I had in mind.

What I want is just have those faster external USB 3.0 drives available while booted from the USB flash drive (which is plugged into a built-in USB 2.0 port), so I can transfer files, restore asr images to and from my internal drives, format and backup partitions, stuff like that.

It is, but I'm not Polish in any way LOL.

No, I mean your face looks European, almost Polish or Czech. Maybe, anyway are you going to work on a software update patch to allow us better ways to update Catalina like in Mojave ? While i don’t mind terminal commands, just wanted to know if a patcher for sw updates will be created (system pref) like in Mojave ?

I just went through the process as per the video for dosdude1's Patcher. All went well on my cMP5,1 until the newly booted Recovery utility complained that the Catalina installer on the USB drive was damaged. I'd downloaded a fresh copy of the Apple installer, all had run well and then <pop!>. This is the 284th page of this thread, can anyone suggest the appropriate post to read for diagnostics?

Dosdude, do you work on G5 Quads ? I have a Quad G5 that works, but the fans are a little loud - coolant checks out ok, but I was just wondering what else could be besides thermal paste and coolant.

Hi,
I tried to install the most recent catalina patcher on my MacBookPro8.1 (2011), but I received a message "The volume "Catalina" does not appear to contain a valid copy of macOS Catalina. Are you sure you want to apply patches to this volume?" when I was doing post-install, which means my Catalina doesn't work properly. I don't know what is the problem. Can someone help me with this? Thanks!

If you happen to have a lot of partitions/drives it is important to select the correct one and of course you should install Catalina on APFS formatted SSD as your Mac has full native APFS support.

@dosdude1 et al

I followed the tutorial very carefully and running into these install errors that I have attached. Any ideas?

In disk Utility it says the SSD is a APFS format. And yet during catalina install...
