I have a 7 year old iMac with the following specifications:

Retina 4K, 21.5 inch Display, 2017

Processor 3.6 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7

Graphics Radeon Pro 560 4 GB

Memory 32 GB 2400 MHz DDR4

It has a 500 GB SSD Internal HDD

I have installed macOS Ventura 13.6.6

In the past few days I have had difficulty with my iMac not waking up from Sleep Mode, this happens infrequently and the longer the iMac has been sleeping the more likely that this will occur.

I have also had trouble starting the iMac with the Power Button, it can take several attempts to finally get it booted up and running.

When the iMac is in usage there are no noticeable problems.

I have tried using the following remedial measures:

Reset VRAM

Reset SMC/PMU

Unplugged ALL devices attached/connected to the iMac and unplugged the iMac from the power supply for 10 to 15 minutes before restarting with NOTHING connected to it at all.

I have run the Apple Diagnostics Tool, which did not find any hardware issues or other technical problems.

I have made a bootable installer USB Drive using macOS Ventura 13.6.6 and used this to completely erase my iMac and perform a fresh clean install of the operating system.

I left the iMac in its unmodified "virginal" state with no apps installed(only default macOS apps) and made absolutely ZERO changes to its configuration.

Yet despite doing all this my problems persist.

I have made a copy of the Problem Report for macOS which is generated on booting up the iMac and is sent to Apple, here it is in full.

I hope somebody here can understand what is being documented in that report and advise if there is a way to fix this.

I fully know my iMac is getting long in the tooth at approximately 7 years of age.

If a repair or replacement of a component can be done at a reasonable cost, I would strongly consider that option as I would like to keep it alive for a while longer. My financial situation means I need more to time to save enough funds for a replacement.

I do hope this aging desktop iMac can be saved.

Is your iMac plugged into the wall or into a surge protector?

My iMac is plugged directly into the wall and there is NO surge protector used.

I am desperately trying to understand what is causing this issue, hopefully this can be fixed for little or no cost. I really don't wish to spend too much on an 7 year old ageing iMac that is due for retirement soon.

I have been carefully cutting expenditures on everything. I have about 3/4 the cost of a new iMac saved and now this happens.

If I can keep this 7 year old iMac alive for a few more months everything will work out fine.

Hi,

I have done both things you advised and noticed no improvement at all to this problem.

The report might indicate a GPU/display problem.
You could try different sleep settings or just turn it off.

I have been posting on the Apple Support Community forums, I was advised to run EtreCheckPro.

The guys stated the results indicated possible failure of the iMac graphics card. This was confirmed by internet searches which said that graphics card failures can indeed causing iMac Sleep and Start up issues.

I contacted over 6 authorized Apple Repairers and they all quoted a ballpark rough estimate of over AUD$600 to replace the graphics card in my iMac.

I am simply not prepared to spend that much on an ageing 7 year old iMac.

So it's time to get a nice brand new entry level iMac with the M3 chip and larger display.

I have a 2019 intel i9 MBP 16', had similar problem as yours when using Ventura , the problem drove me crazy because I never knew when the problem would happen. then I decided to upgrade to Sonoma, no more same issue happened.

hope this will be a good news for you.

Hi,

macOS Somona could NOT be installed because my desktop iMac is a 2017 model and Apple clearly stated doesn't meet the requirements for Somona to be installed.

Unfortunately further diagnostic testing revealed a failing Graphics Card, which I was quoted would cost more than AUD$600 to replaced.

I was unwilling to pay the large amount as my ageing iMac is 7 years old and decided to purchase a brand new entry level desktop iMac with the M3 chip

In Apples testing a 2023 iMac with the M3 chip was compared to a 2019 iMac and in many aspects performance was 4X better.

I have been using my new iMac for a few days now and I know from personal usage those claims are 100% true.

I am so glad I made this choice, the M3 chip makes everything so much faster and responsive.

Happy for you! New M chips are much faster and cooler than intel versions. I bought an M1 Pro MBP for my kid and could feel the difference from the first minute I did the SW installation.
