If you have an Apple HD 5770, you have EFI and can upgrade to MP51.0089.B00 but can’t install Mojave.

Thanks for your reply. Sorry I forgot to mention I tried the steps you described. The firmware version of the Mac Pro is already up-to-date so when I open the 10.13.6 full installer it unfortunately doesn't say upgrade firmware. Even with the original graphics card installed..
So, if I understand correctly, even if I install the Sapphire card when it arrives, I will NOT be able to install Mojave?
Some RX460/480 are not supported by the installer, if you already are on the 138.0.0.0.0 firmware, you can try with a createinstallmedia install or you can take your disk to a supported Mac and do the install there.
This seems a bug on the Metal detection on the installer itself, works after installed.

How do you do the upgrade with a GTX 1070 or GT 120?
When I try with the GTX 1070 it asks me to update the firmware which I do but nothing changes and if I try and update with the GT 120 it says it needs a Metal supported card.

You can’t upgrade from MP51.0085.B00 to MP51.0089.B00 with the RX-580. You have first to upgrade to MP51.0089.B00 with the Apple HD5770, then install the RX-580 to upgrade to 138.0.0.0.0.

GT120 to upgrade to MP51.0089.B00 than install the GTX 1070 and try to upgrade to 138.0.0.0.0. Apple did not test this, so maybe 1070 is not recognized by the installer.Hi,

Btw, you have to wait for NVIDIA web drivers.

OK, that clarifies it for me. Thank you for your assistance on this. I will DL the 10.13.6 installer and see if it will update to MP51.0089.B00. If so, then I will shut down and replace the OEM card with the Sapphire card and install Mojave.
Edit: Hmm, High Sierra seems to be gone from the App Store.
I was able to upgrade my 2010 CMP from the App Store without any issues. The firmware was updated after the download. I did start with 10.13.6 as suggested.
I have a flashed AMD 7950 and the Apple logo still shows on boot-up.

You MUST be on MP51.0089.B00 before installing Mojave.
You NEED an EFI GPU to update any previous Boot ROM Version to MP51.0089.B00.
Once you are on MP51.0089.B00, then you can update to the Mojave firmware 138.0.0.0.0 with any compatible METAL GPU.
To get MP51.0089.B00, you need to download the High Sierra 10.13.6 installer from App Store.
When an EFI GPU is installed, you will be prompted for a firmware update.
Follow the on-screen instructions. (Write them down or print them out.)
When the machine completes firmware update, it will load your previous OS.
IF you are not yet on 10.13.6 (any OS version before build 17G65), you MUST install the 10.13.6 update.

Hi,
I'll make clear what I did.
The Mac Pro was installed with High Sierra with the following config:
ROM version MP51.0089.B00 running with the original card (HD 5770) and High Sierra 10.13.6.
So far so good right?
I then installed the R9 280X (unflashed just stock BIOS), works fine under High Sierra 10.13.6
I downloaded the Mojave installer from the App Store with the R9 280X installed.
I launched the installer and it says the firmware needs to be updated.
I followed the steps as described (shut down the Mac Pro en booted it up again).
The only thing that happens is the Mac Pro boots up, after a few seconds shuts down and boots up again. (No beeps or blinking of the light telling the firmware is updated)
When I check the firmware after rebooting it is still MP51.0089.B00.
The question is what goes wrong here? I believe everything should be fine to upgrade right?

Are you following the proper firmware update instructions?
Shutdown. (Click the SHUTDOWN button on the firmware installer window.)
Turn power on and HOLD power button until long BEEP.
Release power button.
Machine will do it's thing and DVD drive will likely eject.
Machine will automatically shut down.
Machine will automatically restart and DVD drive will likely retract.
macOS will boot.
(Then you can run OS installer.)
Read the first post. You can't install Mojave with HD 5770 and with MP51.0084.B00.

Good, may I know if your 7950 is the reference card?
Yes. I'm currently running 138.0.0.0.0 with 10.13.6 without any issues. In fact, better performance. Waiting for NVIDIA Web Drivers for Mojave before updating, possibly until .1 or .2 release if I can hold off.
