Resolved MBA 2012: automatically dims up (not down) the screen while on battery

I dont get it: while on battery, I like to dim down my screen to 1 bar of brightness. But, for some reason, the MBA automatically dims up the screen to half. No matter if I dim the screen back down, the screen will dim up to half once again on it own?!?! WTF!

Any idea what is up?

System Preferences, Displays, uncheck 'Automatically adjust brightness'. I find it too intrusive.
