iPhone 15 iOS 17, Mac Studio with latest Sonoma.
This may be more of a Mac question than an iPhone one, but I thought I'd start here.
At one point in the past (several years ago) I told Messages to use the iPhone's number and also my iCloud ID (email). I don't remember why.
I want to have Messages use only the number, but I can't remove (uncheck) the Apple ID on the Mac. On the iPhone it remains as a choice and I can check or uncheck it (it's unchecked now).
But on the Mac if I uncheck the Apple ID, the iPhone number is greyed out (and checked). The Apple ID isn't greyed out, and I can't insert the phone number in "Start new conversations from...."
On the iPhone, I have text message forwarding turned on for the Mac.
I tried signing out of iCloud but that didn't help.
I need to be able to receive and send messages from the Mac as well as the phone.
Any ideas? I'm assuming I've got something set incorrectly, but I don't know what it might be.
