My first install of Mojave was an early beta. My Radeon 7970 was not recognized at the time, but I was able to do a command line install. Since then I have been able to use the GUI, but there was always an installation already on the system.
The 79xx series is fully supported in the driver and works well.
I did notice that while there was not problem creating a VMware guest of Mojave on my MacBook Pro, it did not work on my Mac Pro. I suspect the card info is passed to the guest and the release installer still does not recognize the card.
It would be good to find out which cards are natively recognized based on people's experience. I presume cards listed by Apple like RX580 are.
