Missing HDD space after removing Boot Camp partition

It sounds like that volume is not a Fusion or Core Storage volume, and you can skip that step and just go right to formatting the drive. Make sure you do it like I showed in post #43 there.

I erased the volume again and still only have 597 out of 1000GB. There is a OS X Base System volume with 2.01 GB under "Disk Images" on the Disk Utility. Should I erase that too? I should also note that under "Internal" in the disk utility it only shows the new "Untitled" volume without the dropdown arrow on the side to open it like on the image you posted.

I ran "diskutil list" in the terminal and here are the first few lines:

/dev/disk0 (internal, physical):
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: GUID_partition_scheme *1.0 TB disk0
1: EFI EFI 209.7 MB disk0s1

Are you sure you are in Internet recovery when doing this. It sounds like you are not. Hold command-option-r at start up then you should see a spinning grey globe while the recovery utility downloads. Once that is done you will see the recovery screen. Then use Disk Util to erase the whole drive like in my screenshot.

Are you seeing that grey spinning globe? That is the key. If you do not see that , you are not in Internet recovery and this will not work.

@Weaselboy I think I missed a step earlier but was able to finally delete the whole drive in the internet recovery. Do I need to create a fusion drive now? If so, I tried following your step "diskutil cs create fusion disk0s2 disk1s2" and got the following error: "could not find disk for disk1s2" .

Okay... I only see one physical disk, so I don't think you had a Fusion drive setup and you can just proceed with the OS install.

All those small drives shown are normal and virtual drives setup by the installer, and they will disappear after the install is done.

I think we can get you fixed up... go to this post and follow the instructions to get into Internet recovery and kill the Fusion drive with the diskutil cs delete :"Macintosh HD" command and erase both drives as explained in that post. Don't reinstall the OS yet.

Then follow the steps in this post to rebuild the Fusion drive. Once the Fusion drive is back up you can reinstall or restore from Time Machine.

This will of course wipe all your data, so make sure you have a backup.

Before getting started at all, can I use Time Machine to take my backup?

For any others out there with the same problem, it's easy!! I was still a little bit afraid to mess things up, but being on the other side now and having my disk recovered, I can say that it was easy!

Hello,

For some reason my mac stopped working about 2 weeks ago. When tried to turn on i can only access bootcamp.

I visited apple store and was told to reinstall mac by using internet recovery.
so I tried pressing T while starting the computer and I managed to get all the needed data from the mac side.

However, now after i reinstall the mac, there is only 137GB thats usable and showed in disk utility while it is supposed to be a 1TB mac book pro (15inch late 2014).

I have reinstalled a few times and its always the same result. another 800 GB are just gone.
Bootcamp partition is disappeared as well as i tried pressing option while turning on and nothing showed up...

note:
the first time i tried to reinstall, I only got 137 GB usable; however i can still see other partitions in terminal by using command diskutil cs list. now nothing is showed. think i might did something wrong while setting up or its just that the SSD is damaged...

Please if you can help with this issue. Really appreciated.

No, i dont have it. but I have a copy of everything from the mac partition. I just simply copied everything to a new external hard drive... not sure if this would help..

That is okay... do this. Hold command-option-r at boot to get to Internet recovery. Select your wifi then you should see a grey spinning globe while the recovery utility downloads. That grey spinning globe it important... if you don't see that reboot and try again because you are not in Internet recovery.

Once the recovery utility come up, select Disk Utility then check show all devices like in my screenshot. Then select the drive itself at the very top of the of the left column. Then click erase and format the entire drive to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Then quit Disk Utility and click install OS.

That should erase the drive back to one large volume and reclaim your space.

This will of course erase all your data.

Yes I saw the spinning globe and was sure that I wa sin internet recovery mode.

I erased the disk again and as I understood, this should bring back the storage. However, as I tried again after erasing , it still showed that I only have 137 GB. In the installation part, there’s only 137 available to install the system..

I'm confused, because that should show the 1TB on the first line, even if there are left over Bootcamp partitions on there.

While in Internet recovery are you sure you are selecting Apple SSD at the top there in Disk Utility, then clicking the erase tab and selecting Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then applying that format?

Yes, I did the same as suggested.

Now I’m thinking of the possibility of the damaged ssd...

It’s weird because I could still use my boot camp perfectly fine and I even managed to get all the data after failing to boot my Mac.

This 137GB is probably the left over storage I had before I wiped out everything for reinstalling the system.
