Have you looked at Perian? Then you might be able to convert mkv's in QuickTime Player X.

If that doesn't work (Perian's mkv support was always a bit hiss or miss), you might install Subler 0.31 (last Snow Leopard compatible version). Or, if you're handy with the Terminal, install MacPorts and then `port install ffmpeg`.
