I've read a couple threads about credit card issues with mobileme, so I wanted to share a different story. I wasn't happy about .mac but I thought I'd give this a shot (would love push on my 3g iphone) so I signed up for the trial. I used a gift "credit card" with no money ($0) on it and the name "Gift Card Recipient" as the name. Mobileme took it with no problems and started my trial.
I didn't want to put my credit card on the account just in case I forget to cancel the service before the trial ends, if I decide I don't want it.
So the lesson here is that if your card isn't working, dig up one of these (everybody gets them once in a while).
