The Lenovo monitor appears to be an excellent value and has good reviews. Here's the spec sheet. It appears it's not a native 10-bit display. It says "10-bit (8+ FRC)," but that makes sense for the price. Still, if it's able to achieve the full Adobe RGB color space that's impressive.

That looks like a pretty nice monitor. I can't find any published specs on Adobe RGB coverage though. It's probably a little low or else they would advertise it.

We should probably stick to monitors the Mac Pro can run by itself, but I suppose with an eGPU any monitor could be used. I'm sure it's well known, but I recently discovered the Blackmagic eGPUs support Apple's Pro Display XDR and the LG Ultrafine displays. Those have lower Adobe RGB coverage though. Apple doesn't target photographers I suppose. PCMag tested the Pro XDR and it achieved 96.7% Adobe RGB. That's great for a consumer panel, but pretty awful for a $5-6k display. I think the Dell 8K display would be a better choice (UP3218K). Dell advertises that as achieving 100% Adobe RGB. That one could be driven with any eGPU that has two DP 1.4 outputs (or a TB3 to dual DP 1.4 adaptor in the Blackmagic case.) Dell recommends an RX 480 or better in the user guide.
Get a used DELL 2715K 27“ 5K display with dual dp cable. I was rocking two of those on the trashcan and then on the new cheesegrater just fine. The best displays that you can get for the can if you ask me.
It looks like those are hard to find. I haven't seen any on eBay. It looks like the last one that sold on there was in February. I'll keep my eyes open.

I found a Blackmagic eGPU for a good price, so I snagged it. I couldn't have built my own eGPU for that. I'm still waiting for a TB3 adapter and TB2 cable to arrive to connect it to the Mac, but in the meantime I connected it to an Intel NUC. It was a little challenging getting Windows to recognize it. At first it didn't show up in the device manager, so I updated Windows and the BIOS, etc and it finally recognized it. Then the AMD drivers wouldn't recognize it. I manually installed the Pro 580 Boot Camp driver. I selected that since it's the same GPU as in the iMac. It seemed to work well after that.
I ran Geekbench 5 and it scored 36125 for OpenCL. That doesn't seem so bad. It'll be interesting to see how it compares on the Mac over the TB2 bus. Geekbench identifies it as a "Radeon Pro 580X."

That seems to be pretty common. 8-bit + FRC might not be so bad though. It looks like it uses some trick technology to fake extra colors by flashing two simultaneously. If your eyes can't tell the difference then I don't see how it matters much. A lot of 8-bit displays are 6-bit + FRC. A person in this thread said, "some 8 bit + FRC panels have smoother color transitions, less banding than some native 10bits panels."

Mostly Adobe apps like Photoshop and Lightroom. I'm also interested to see how it handles HEVC video. I'll be using it with my D500 machine. I have a D300 machine as well. Edit: It lagged really bad over the TB2 bus so I sold it and got a D700 Mac Pro.

I don't know. The warranty might only be valid for Australia. I realized I posted this in the wrong thread though. I meant to post it in the price discussion thread. I should make posts about the GPU in the GPU thread too. This one should stay monitor discussion.
I received the Lenovo ThinkVision P27u-10 monitor today and it's gorgeous. The colors appear to be very good. The anti-reflective coating is also very nice. The difference in resolution compared to my old Dell U2415 is incredible. What's interesting is that the monitor size is very similar since the other one is 16:10. It's just a little wider.

So Lenovo is having a Memorial Day sale today with doorbuster deals. It clearly says in the email they sent that prices were dropping. The P27u monitor is one of those doorbusters and guess what they did with the price. It went up by $25 from yesterday. Tsk tsk.

Rockin' a the latest LG 4k Ultrafine monitor with the mac pro 2013. Looks like the newer 23.5" that came out in 2019 works. One cable with an adapter (Apple's USB-C to thunderbolt 2). Took the risk today and worth it for me since I have a MacBook pro 2018. Can use the monitor for both computers. Price wise it is not worth it if you are using the monitor solely for the mac pro 2013, but again use it with my Macbook Pro 2018. Just disable the automatic brightness in the display panel (sensor seems to be making the monitor slightly go up and down in brightness) and everything else works (keyboard adjustment for the brightness and audio volume works). Make sure to install LG's app from Apple store.
If during boot up after login the monitor goes blank, just wait and it will eventually work. Then you are good to go with the LG 4k with the mac pro 2013.

I have been using the Dell U2718Q since from the start of owning my Mac Pro 6,1. This is my personal computer and is not used to anything professional. I didn't need 99-100% Adobe RGB. I looked for a 4k monitor that matched with black/grey colors. As for as I can tell the D300's are fine for 4k monitors. The most demanding thing I generally do is watching 1080p videos.

One little sad thing is of course the lost opportunity of using 'HDR' and taking completely advantage of the monitor but that can't be done with the "old" displayports on the Mac Pro. I thought about the LG 5K but not being able to use the 5K and the double the price tag didn't make sense to me. The Dell U2718Q was the best monitor for me before getting too far away from the Mac Pro 6,1 technological wise...

Returned the LG 4K Ultrafine Monitor to Apple. Though it works, it constantly had issues with powering up after the first boot screen. It would go asleep and I would have to unplug and boot again. I was using just one thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 adapter, but probably could have used two into the Mac Pro 2013 to give it more power, but decided I did not want to keep having issues and the price tag didn't seem worth it for a 4k monitor in 2020.
So..I bought an LG 27UL850 instead and it does the job. Seems really cheaply built, but the screen is nice. As long as I just look at the screen and don't really pay attention to anything else of the monitor, it is fine. Probably spoiled having my Apple Thunderbolt Monitor. Love it, but now my eyes don't like the reflections from lighting and bothers me after some years, so the matted unreflective coat on the LG 27UL850 works better for me. Displayport sometime seem to have the sleep issues (maybe it is just my computer), but instead use the HDMI port which is not having issues. I really wanted the LG 5K Ultrafine monitor, but the price tag I could not justify.
Sometimes my Dell monitor wouldn’t wake up during boot. The Lenovo is better with that. It also automatically selects the input based on what’s connected. The Dell wouldn’t do that. So that’s a nice feature. I haven’t had an LG monitor. I’ve read those don’t have a power button which is kind of odd. You might want to try a Lenovo. I like mine so far.
Already spent for the LG so I am stuck with that it seems. Not having issues with it and does not have issues going to sleep. Just that sometimes when it is coming out of sleep the screen first gets grainy with colors for a second before it identifies the port it is using (HDMI), but hey...just live with it. Other than that it works.
The audio...well...built in monitor audio speakers are not really generally good anyway, but it is acceptable. Apple' Thunderbolt was the best built in monitor speakers I have had and miss using the monitor. Too bad my older eyes can't handle the glare any longer..
Overall the LG 27UL850-W works ok with the mac pro 2013. 2560x1440 looks like acceptable resolution to balance size and text. Don't use the 4k resolution, but the picture looks good.
