Quick but simple question, but does the default apple hd 2600 xt support metal? when going into my mac's settings, nothing appears as metal under GPU that says metal. I'm trying to use OCLP to upgrade the mac to sonoma.

Nope, all AppleOEM GPUs released for MacPro3,1/4,1/5,1 are not compatible with METAL, too old.
For 3rd party GPUs usually most GPUs released AFTER 2012 are METAL compatible, like NVIDIA Kepler and AMD GCN 2.0, anything earlier is not compatible with METAL.
