Multi-session Burning and Disk Utility

I'm trying to burn a DVD-R, but leave it open for future additions. I've created disk image and tried to set the "leave disk appendable" option when burning in Disk Utility, but the option is greyed out.

What might my problems be?

I'm on a 15" Al-Book with Mac OS X 10.3.6 and a Matshita UJ-816 DVD-R drive.
