I have a 2GB Nano which worked wonderfully... until yesterday.

During use I got an onscreen message (which is still there) stating:

Firewire connections are not supported. To transfer songs, connect using the USB cable provided.

I have always connected through USB and have never used a firewire cable. Since this message appeared the unit WILL NOT power down.

I have tried the following:

1) Reset player by following manufacturer's instructions.

2) Downloaded current software (found that I was already using it).

3) Restored by running 'Updater 2005-10-12

I am still seeing the same message onscreen and the unit will not power down...

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I had many troubles with my iPod Nano in 2018-19 were windows 10 fixed 5 problems High Sierra could not.
Mojave to Monterey is running this iPad as Snow leopard did!
Useful knowledge. I sure hope OP got his nano to power off... if it's been on for nearly 2 decades I want that battery.

I need some 2010 iTouch apps, I wish someone would sell those!
good luck with the battery, My iPod nano 4GB 2007 still last a long time, and now works perfectly!
except to using on my Bose iPod player unless I sue the speaker plug.
