I think Apple should forget about the prosumer and professional line-ups. Now, don't take that wrong. I am suggesting that Apple forget about the speed war and let faster chips come as they may from either IBM or Moto. The speed proved too much for the PowerPC side of things a long time ago, and Intel is now pulling ahead of AMD (AMD might fold up shop). The money right now is in the el-cheapo consumer (i.e. the success of the C3 processor).
That said, Apple needs the CRT iMac to live a long life. Here's what I propose for November:
15" CRT iMac
- 600MHz G3
- 256K L2 Cache
- 100MHz System Bus
- 128MB RAM
- 15" CRT
- 16MB ATi Rage
- 40GB Hard Drive
- CD-RW
- Starts at $599
17" CRT iMac
- 800MHz G3 (Sahara)
- 512K L2 Cache
- 133MHz System Bus
- 256MB RAM
- 17" Flat-Screen CRT
- 32MB GeForce2 MX
- 40GB Hard Drive
- Combo Drive
- Starts at $799
Yes, the professional line is important to Apple's bottom line, but the bottom of the barrel in performance is where customers are flocking. The Sahara G3 is cheap, produces little heat, draws a minute amount of energy, and runs as fast as a G4 in some instances. The G4 should be reserved for the iMac and PowerMac, and both should use the 7470. The PowerMac should house two G4s, the iMac one. The eMac should be retired in favor of a broader iMac line.
PowerMac
- 2x1400MHz G4s (7470)
- 166MHz System Bus (333MHz effective)
- 333MHz DDR Memory (PC2700)
- SuperDrive Standard
- 512MB RAM Standard
- Radeon 9700 Standard
- Starts at $1499
FP iMac
- 1x1200MHz G4 (not anytime soon, but eventually)
- 166MHz System Bus (33MHz effective)
- 333MHz DDR Memory (PC2700)
- Combo Drive Standard (SuperDrive available)
- 256MB RAM Standard
- Radeon 9000 Standard
- 15" and 17" LCDs available
- Starts at $1199
