Prior to the Keynote, there was a rumor about Apple opening up the NFC chip to enable it to unlock doors etc. Did they?

The leak was probably based on the fact that the new school ID capability is most likely using the NFC chip to unlock doors and it was interpreted as a broader initiative. Leaks are not always 100% representative of what is actually announced.

It's pretty clear Apple is opening up the NFC capabilities.

The universities participating in Student ID all use Blackboard Transact which is basically an NFC pay and security system. It's only a matter of time before it gets expanded to more popular systems like HID iClass.

It’s possible that this could require hardware change and be exclusive to the next round of iPhones.
