obtain a VAT number

How old do you have to be to obtain a VAT number? Hi im 18 and wish to start a business that requires a VAT number, however im not sure if i can get one. Ive looked online and have ben unable to obtain the answers that i wanted. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Is there any particular reason why you want to register for VAT?
