iPod 5th gen Video (MA002FB), 30gb, version 1.3

I've unearthed this recently and I'm trying to connect using

a) a third party cable, recently purchased (not sure if data transfer pins are wired having looked back at the cable description)
b) the iPod/iPad/iPhone Composite AV cable (not sure if this does data transfer...?)
c) a usb-b / line out dock that I know worked for data transfer

and none of them work for anything other than charging, which works fine with any of the cables.

On looking at the Mac, it doesn't even see the iPod in system-USB, let alone iTunes.

Same in Windows, no USB connection is established, but again it charges.

No bent pins / obvious damage on the iPod connector.

I've been in the iPod diagnostics and there are no reallocated or pending sectors - so probably not a hard disk problem, especially as I can play back the music (circa 2007) on the iPod itself.

The iPod can be controlled as well as charged using a Sony audio dock - not sure if that's relevant but I thought I'd include it for completeness.

Any ideas what the problem is here?
