I was trying to install iOS 12 on my old iPhone 6s plus.

I took the Sim out when I upgraded to the iPhone 8 last year.

I wanted to play with iOS 12 on my old device.

It will not even start the install with no Sim installed ....

Any ideas or am I out of luck?

You need a SIM - any sim. You can use an old inactive SIM you have lying around, or swap the SIM from your 8 into the 6s for activation. You can take the SIM out after you're past the activation screen.
