OSInstall.mpkg.93Oi3x6T folder

a folder named "OSInstall.mpkg.93Oi3x6T" seems to have just appeared in the last week or so (i only noticed it today) on my hard drive, alongside such folders as; applications, desktop folder, library, etc.

inside the folder are a bunch of files named things like "AdditionalEssentials.installpan"

does anyone know:
a) what this is
b) how it got there
c) can i just trash it

Place it in the trash can without emptying for a week or so and see if the system still runs as normal.
