I stupidly forgot the password that I set between getting the device and waiting for the optical inserts to arrive. My device still had the original software loaded, so Apple Support confirmed that I needed to take it to the Apple Store to be reset. I made an appointment for 2 days later at the South Coast Plaza store in SoCal. Although they had the required Developer Headband and the instructions, they had never tried to reset one before, so lots of time was spent with their techs discussing how to proceed. They were very frustrated and it's a pity that they hadn't been allowed to have a device to practice on. They were able to successfully reset my device and the software upgraded tp 1.0.3 as part of the process meaning that the password can be reset in future without resetting.
