What PCIe mini-SAS HBA (host bus adapter) cards are supported on a Mac Pro (mid 2010; 5,1)?

I'm thinking about using an older LTO tape drive to back up the internal disks of my cMP and most of the external tape drives have mini-SAS connectors (SFF-8088). Looking for an older HBA card, since the newer / modern cards (by Atto for instance) are way too costly. There are lots of these cards out there, but most don't indicate support for macOS.

Who's got experience with such a scenario?

What should I be looking for?

Any ideas?

UPDATE:

After some more research I found this report regarding the options and experience of using a tape drive with a Mac or PC. It's an excellent write-up by Matt Millman that contains many useful bits of information on the subject.
