I hope this is the right place for this!

Alright, I've got my old 68k Performa sitting next to me, I formatted it earlier today, it's currently running OS 8.1, clean install. I used to be able to get on the net with it, however for some reason, for the life of me I can't get anything to work! I really want to get some use out of it with an IRC client or something or some classic games, but I just can't seem to get it to connect to the net. I'm using a US Robotics 56k external modem. I think the DIP switches on the modem might be messed up, I've tried messing with them to no avail, and also I've tried installing the software that came with it of course, no luck. Any ideas? To the best of my knowledge everything is configured properly and it should be working. I'm trying to connect via SBC dialup. I was searching/reading around, and I found some things about direct connecting the machine to this pc (winxp, sp2, connected directly to dsl modem) for net connection sharing over the modems on the two machines. I don't really understand how to do this though because since it's a modem and all, it needs a phone number to dial I would guess, and I've never heard of giving your pc a phone number=\ Anyways, has anyone tried something like this? Links to software/articles would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks very much!

Are you still on Macrumors?

I am sorry that nobody has stepped up to help you with this issue.

If you have access to the internet with an other computer at home, I would recommend looking at a few sites that helped me get my older systems on the net way before I joined Macrumors. Most of those sites are gone now, but the following may assist you.

most basic help in getting your system on the internet
http://www.rtis.com/nat/user/toolbox/oldmacs/

Good web browser for 68k. I use this on my Quadra without issue.

Notes

The 100 and 120 MHz configurations used a 603e processor, which had 16 kB data and instruction level 1 caches.

The PowerMac 6200 was a 5200 in a Quadra 630-style case. The 6200 was sold only in Europe, but was released in the US as the Performas 6200CD, 6205CD, 6210CD, 6214CD, 6216CD, 6218CD, 6220CD, and 6230CD, each bundled with a 15" monitor, and a different hard drive. In late 1995 and early 1996, apple released several more machines based on the same motherboard, with similar specs: The Performas 6260CD, 6290CD, 6300CD, and 6310CD each ran on a 100 MHz 603e, and the PowerMac 6300/120 and the Performa 6320 each ran on a 120 MHz 603e. They were all eventually replaced by the Performa 6360.

By todays Standards this computer would be considered worthless, but I think for dial-up, and old games (some of my personal favorite things), and things like that this would be the perfect candidate. This is one of the earlies PowerPC's Apple had, and was quite good and costly in its day. This was comprible to my first Macintosh a (Pefroma 6115CD 601 66mhz) it was perfect on the internet, and good old games, Sim City, Oregon Trail, Word Munchers :D ... If you get this working I am certain it will do you well.

Yes your correct, I was about to say you can't run Mac OS 8.1 on a 68k Mac...well without hacking it that is :p

Uh, can't you? Wasn't 8.1 that last Mac OS version capable of running on a 68k Mac?

What kind of connection problems are you having? Have you tried an init string for the modem? Back when I did technical support for an ISP, that used to solve problems ...

edit: According to everymac.com, the Performa 6300 series were all PowerPC 603e machines ;) http://everymac.com/systems/by_casetype/desktop.html

The 68030 could handle 7.6.1 and the 68040 could run up to 8.1. The 68040 was the last 68k chip I recall.
