With my band, we decided to buy a firewire mixer. After some thoughts and surfing on the net, we have narrowed down the selection to this two:

1) Phonic Helix 18. http://www.zzounds.com/item--PHOHELIX18FW

2) Alesis Multimix 16. http://www.zzounds.com/item--ALEMULTIMIX16FW

Anybody here has some experience with any of these mixers? Sound quality? noise? drivers issues?

I read that the Alesis had a lot of driver-related problems, but that they have been corrected since.

We plan to use this to record demos at our home-based studio, nothing fancy. The mixer would be hooked up to a 15" Al Powerbook, 1.5 Ghz, 1 Gig RAM connected to a 160GB LaCie HDD through firewire 800, using Cubase SX 1.06. How many simultaneous track will the powerbook be able to handle (assuming no software effects, but for reverb on some tracks)?
