I’m running Itunes on my mac from an old operating software (High sierra 10.13.6) It’s not been since downloaded. It’s got to the point now where I’m going to have to upgrade and loose Itunes. Is there a way I can download Itunes again and maintain my play counts that I have always had? It's 20 years worth! I understand all the play count data is within a file within in the Itunes folder.

Also could I still update my play counts from new plays on my iphone?

Many thanks

If you are talking about updating MacOS on that computer to one that now has Music instead of iTunes, when you first run Music you will have the option to import all your music from iTunes. All data including Play Counts will be included.

I thought Apple music done away with play counts? So there still there?
