Phones Playing video in VLC from SD card

I just got the note 7 and it's my first Android device ever so excuse the noobish question but I have a bunch of movies in my external SD card but can't figure out how to get them in to VLC. It won't find the directory and I've tried manually adding a bunch of directories manually that were suggested online but none worked.
