What is the best way to 1) suppress messages/notifications and 2) listen to (and SKIP) songs on Spotify while driving without having to touch the phone?

This is a problem and we don't want a ticket for holding the phone or, worse, an accident.

Mute it BEFORE you start driving.
Pull over and STOP before using the phone.
Doing otherwise is asking for trouble.
Nobody used to use telephones inside their car - because they didn't exist in the past - and nobody missed them.

I turned off lockscreen notifications(thus the phone wouldnt light up). And as for skipping songs,my car has audio controls on the steering wheel(or you can use the audio remote). Or likeskyhawkmatthew mentioned, use SIRI.

I didn't think it was possible to have Siri help with Spotify commands while using Do Not Disturb.

Use Apple Carplay. Or just set the phone to bluetooth stream and leave it in your pocket, use the steering wheel controls.
