I'm an existing ATT Wireless subscriber than will not be upgrade eligible until next year. I attempted to order an iPhone at an ATT store today at the 399/499 pricepoints but the local sales guy said I wasn't even eligible for that. That doesn't sound right but it got me thinking...

I'm thinking about buying a 3G iPhone at the Apple Store under a new account. after that is completed could I then port my existing number to the new (iPhone) account and then cancel my old account, paying the early termination fee for the old account?

A second option is to just use the ATT SIM from my current account in the iPhone and cancel the new account after 30 days. Either way I'd still end up paying the ETF but that's cheaper than the 399/499 prices.
