Possible to create a smaller course platform like Udemy/Udacity with templates?

I just created this thread asking what that developer is using to build his teaching channel/platform. IMO it looks very nice.

I'm posting a second thread because it's like a part II to that thread. I don't create web sites so what do you think the best way is to create your own teaching platform/channel with templates or other means?

Could I use some basic jQuery theme with an ecommerce element?

Yes moodle is very good, also on Joomla there are very good LMS and training plugins. The look and feel is simply a 12 column grid layout with standard css features, nothing special there really...
