Power4 Versus other 64-bit Processors

Just in case anyone didn't know this. I got all data from Tom's Hardware. They were reporting the data from spec.org, a respected benchmarker. Looks like the Power4 is in the lead (at least currently).

Now that McKinley is here as the Itanium 2, it officially beats the Power4 in both integer and floating point (1356/1356 in the HP ZX6000 workstation)... and that's only at 1GHz.

MIPS processors should also be on the list, but they'd be the slowest. Although they would also be by far the most power-efficient.

Really? Ouch. So what now.. Power4s are due for a revision soon I believe, right?

I'd be pretty skeptical of those numbers. I believe those are the numbers that HP came out with at release and the word was that something rather dodgy was done to get them. In virtually every real world test I have seen the McKinley servers have come out behind the POWER4.

If that is indeed the case, then we'll have to wait and see how other Itanium2 systems perform as they become available, because I think HP is the only company that makes them at the moment(?).

Even if the int and fp results were 200 too high though, those are still really impressive scores for only 1GHz. And Intel's Itanium compiler is getting better all the time...

I believe they were last speed-bumped in October of last year. I'm not sure how much higher they'll go, but the Power5 is due some time next year...

Now if only Apple would actually put it, or a light version, in the desktops... Wishful thinking probably though.
