I have been using this 2006 Mac Pro 1,1 on El Capitan for a few weeks. 32GB ram, 1TB SSD as the system volume and in general it has been very snappy.

It started getting really slow the last day or so.

I had a bunch of tabs open in Chrome. I saw on the Activity Monitor that almost all of my memory was in use and the CPU was completely pegged by many instances of Google Chrome Helper (Renderer).

I killed Chrome and then still, the CPU was being hogged by softwareupdated, mdsworker.

Is there something I can do to brighten this up a bit? Yes, close some tabs, but what else can I do? All of a sudden this MP is not so snappy anymore.
