Proximity sensor issue

Hello, I have a frustrating issue which occurred with both my previous 13 PM and my current 15 PM. Often when I call or receive a call and I try to hang up, when I move my phone to hang up the screen remains blank. It took me awhile to figure out what is wrong ... I have very dry skin and have to use moisturizer and I can see the top of the screen (for my 15 PM) where the dynamic island and sensors are is a bit smeared - I try wiping it away with my finger but it doesn't always work. This doesn't happen when using my Beats Flex airbuds so clearly other than holding the phone away from my ear is there another way to hang up?
