How has the PS3 done in the world of being a reliable piece of hardware?

I know it costs more than the 360 but if it's just generally built better, isn't that worth the price? (Not to mention all the "extras").

I don't like Sony's consoles either. Though I do own a PS2. I'm just curious about this console. I want a next gen console besides my Wii (something for me room) and early next year I'll either buy a 360 or PS3. ;)

I haven't seen anything like the 3 LEDs of death on the PS3 (on any of the many gaming sites I visit). My PS3s HDD died but hey it's a HDD some are b0rked. I just chucked in a 160 GB drive and moved on.

I'd say the quality of the PS3 is excellent.

:)

I didn't consider the PS2 to be a very reliable console, almost all of my friends PS2s broke. I haven't heard very much in the way of PS3s getting fried or anything like that, so it must be pretty solid.

The internal cooling system is impressive, to say the least. In general, PS3 systems are drastically more reliable than the Xbox 360 (Of course, most cheapo DVD Players are, too) and on par with the Wii.

Rocketing through the sky!
Well on the IGN podcast they said that their figures (where-ever they get them from) show 3-5% or under. They were mentioning that PS3 failure rates were what MS was SAYING their failure rate was (3 to 5%) and even under that.

Basically it (the PS3) has a normal failure rate for any piece of electronics hardware.

It's apparent the 360 doesnt.

Out of our 4 Japan imports, 1 was broke. We called out a plain old technician who said it was something to do with power input.
Basically we were up sh*t creek and made enough of a profit the cover the original cost of the faulty system.

Since Folding was released, my PS3 has not been turned off except for four days when our internet was out of service. It is either gaming or Folding 24/7, and hasn't missed a beat or even felt more than a shade warmish. Heck, my 360 is warmer than my PS3 even when it's turned off.:p If there are hardware issues, I have not seen or heard of them.
Have to say, now that the newness of the Wii and PS3 is worn off, I'm playing my 360 and PS2 more than those other consoles. They both need more games.

It's nice seeing good short-term stats, I'm curious about long-term. Just as the PS1 and 2's lasers would cop out after 1-2 years.

I wonder if the same long-term laser issue could appear on the 360 too. Pity they don't last long enough to check :D
