Quicktime problem viewing 'Gallery' movies

When trying to view a movie in my Gallery window, the spinner starts, but then a faded looking blue quicktime logo with a question mark in it covers the spinner (which continues to spin to no avail). Alternatively I can click on the URL in the upper right of the window, and the movie loads and plays perfectly.

This is a new iMac (Feb, 2010), and this problem did NOT occur on the previously owned iMac!

WHAT GIVES?
