I am trying to find a PCI Rage 128 board (Orion or some such) to use as a video card to drive a 2nd monitor. Does anyone know where these can be had?

This may not help but..

They are still avaiable in Australia from AppleCentres.

I sold one not long ago for about $180AU ($90US) may be cheaper.

ATI Rage 128 PRO PCI with 8mb.

Try applecentres (Actually, you only Have APPLE run AppleCentres so try Resellers)

(Just to let everyone in the US know, Australia has had AppleCentres for years, but they are not owned or opperated by Apple in any way shape or form)

Is anyone else out there an Apple Collector? I am and I feel alone. I have about 45 different models, about 70 machines total.. All older machines, powerbooks and newtons.
Contact me if you are, I would like to here from you

I just bought a Rage Orion 16M card on eBay for about $100 USD. There are more out there and some are going for around $120.

BTW -- I loved those Apple Centres in Sydney and will have to check them out again next month while I'm in Oz. A strong USD helps too :)

Rage Pro PCI in USA

Was there ever a Rage PRO PCI card available in the USA from Apple or ATI. I know only of Rage 128 cards for PCI.

Rage Pro

Yes, there were many Rage Pro boards for the Mac. I had a Rage XClaim 3D board (Rage Pro 4MB) as a 2nd monitor video card in my old blue&white G3 400.

Rage Pro PCI

Thanks, I guess these have faster RAMDAC's and better performance than the Rage 128 chip cards?

Rage Pro or Rage 128

Less performance in Rage Pro? The AGP versions use faster chips and have a fan. Is it a memory issue?

Radion VE Mac Edition Dual Head in September $129

Why waste your money on an old card when the new ATI Radion VE Mac Edition Dual Head 32 MB PCI Card ships in September for only $129 list? Has DVI-I which can also be used as an analog output as well as an analog output that can also be used to drive a TV. It's the bomb! Get it instead of OLD obsolete technology.

Why not? For the same reason I did not use a regular PCI Radeon for the 2nd display--some users report problems with the PCI Radeon under OS X. At this time. It seems rather likely it will be addressed soon, however. That aside, it does make a great 2nd monitor board (as you can add on a 3rd monitor later if you like). It is a rather poor choice as a primary card if you're interested in 3D. The Radeon VE is quite a crippled version of the Radeon--but quite fast for 2D.

I ended up snagging a barely-used Rage 128 Orion. I only care about 2D, and it's faster than the rev 1 Rage 128 that came with my old G3, so I know it definitely is all I need for 2D/Quicktime playback on that 2nd screen. $110 for it on eBay.

I'm satisfied for the time being.
