Nobody knows the specs of their new device, but it sounds like it will be powered by an M-based processor. This alone will give them a major advantage given the power and efficiency of those chips.

What’s going to be very interesting is the weight of the device. The AirPods Max is about 384g. Meta Quest 2 is at 503g, and the Meta Quest Pro is at 722g. If the device was half the weight of the Quest 2, how would that change the experience? Given that most people would probably use the device for maybe a few hours at a time, the battery wouldn’t have to be massive, so this would cut down weight quite a bit.

Another factor in weight could be the sound system, but I’m assuming the device won’t have integrated headphones. The first AirPods came out at the end of 2016. Presumably Apple has been working on their VR/AR device since around that time. First M-based chips arrived end or 2020. I think all of these pieces have a part to play.
