I thought these would be really common (I"m not a web designer, I just like things ready to go out of the box with some back end customisation).

Seems all the sites I went to have a very different range of styles, and these aren't so in vogue these days. Do you guys. know of any template that looks like either site. Has to be modern too, all the latest tricks and great usability.

Only one I found was this:

https://3oneseven.com/new-yorker-magazine-theme/

Can you advise on what sort of limitations I would have with that theme, compared to the two sites I like above. Also I want to get geeky with some plugins (Stock market tickers and Twitter and Instagram feeds). Would I be limited with that theme above?

I quite like this one: https://themesindep.com/neomag/
Sale Page: https://themeforest.net/item/neomag-news-and-magazine-wordpress-theme/24781278

If you buy through Themeforest the support for widgets and plugins should be good.

Nice thanks! That looks really similar with layout. Maybe if I played with fonts and settings I could make it less modern and glossy feeling!

Is wordpress.com the best way to start a new Wordpress site, or are there cheaper options, like Bluehost maybe?

£300 a year on Wordpress.com to be able to use plugins it says! Ouch. Bluehost seems to be much much cheaper:

But not sure if that includes ability to use all Wordpress features?
