Hello lovely mac people,
This is my first post and I would like a little advice/guidance with an issue-

I recently bought a 2012 2.3ghz quad core Mac mini that had the stock 1tb drive which had a fresh mountain lion os recovery install.

I decided to add an ssd, I erased the 1tb disk, bought the owc kit, followed the instructions nervously and it worked! Phew.

I then used time machine to install my os, files etc from my MacBook Pro onto the minis ssd with the old 1tb drive still installed for media files. All wonderful so far.

I have recently received an old copy of avid pro tools 10. I would like to be able to use this on the Mac mini. Therefore ideally I would like to reinstall mountain lion on the old 1tb spinning disk drive I have in the mini (for use solely with this old version of pro tools), while leaving Mac OS sierra installed on the ssd. But I can't work out how to do it.

The drive is formatted correctly with guid partition map, but i cannot recover from this drive to mountain lion. It just defaults to the ssd to recovery install Mac OS sierra. The old hard drive is not recognised as a bootable drive (because I erased it before adding the ssd).

I can't create a bootable USB as I don't have mountain lion in my purchase history in the App Store.

Is there a way I can make it work? Do I have to create a bootable drive? Or could I open the mac up and unplug the ssd then attempt recovery with just the HDD?

I'm sorry if I haven't explained this very well and sorry that the post is so long.

If anyone could offer some advice I'd be very grateful.

The 2012 Mac mini shipped with OS 10.8 (Mountain Lion) so you would be able to install it using Internet Recovery (Option-Command-R at startup). Internet Recovery installs the OS that shipped with your Mac.
