When I open large images in Safari on my iPad mini 4 and iPhone 5s (both running iOS 9.2.1) they are not scaled down to fit the screen.

For example this picture: http://i.imgur.com/qk13Wd8.jpg

On my iPad mini 4 it looks like this: http://abload.de/img/img_00048dsaz.jpg

It does not matter if I hold the device in portrait or landscape orientation. The image is never fully visible at once. Also double tap does not change anything.

Is it a bug? Is it a feature? Is there a workaround?

It's seems to be a 'feature' that Safari mobile only scales images so they fill horizontally. I submitted feedback on this a few releases ago.

What's especially annoying is that iPhone's own photos are 4:3, which means you can't view them properly in Safari on an iPhone.

Let's say you're viewing a landscape 4:3 photo, your options are either to
a) view in portrait so you can see the whole image at once, but you're not making the most of your screen (the photos not as big as it could be) or
b) view it in landscape so it takes up more of the screen, but now you have to scroll to see all of the photo.

That's odd, because friends of mine don't have this problem with the exact same image.
