Safari won't remember its window size after quitting app

I'm currently facing the following minor –but rather annoying– bug in Safari (Version 11.1 [13605.1.33.1.2]).

Safari will no longer remember its window size after closing the application. What I mean by that is that whenever I resize a Safari window while simultaneously holding the option key/cmd key and then quit the application and re-open it, Safari will auto-resize itself. The only app that seems to have this issue is Safari. All my other apps seems to work just fine remembering their resized window dimensions.

This problem began just a few days ago when updating to the latest release of macOS High Sierra (Version 10.13.4 [17E199]).

As I said in the beginning, this is a minor issue but still annoys me so if anyone could share some knowledge on how to solve this (OR maybe at least know if there are other users facing the same problem) it would be greatly appreciated.

That's correct. I quit the app altogether.

What's even more strange (and again, this only happens with Safari) is that after quitting the app altogether and reopening it, its window size will increase in height to almost encompass the space between the dock and the menu bar but leaving a fair margin of space between them YET when quitting it again and reopening it, this time the height will go all the way from the dock to the menu bar.

This seems so weird and I'm sorry if I can't really explain how this happens. Wish I could record a gif of it to make it clearer.

resize Safari window height to a small value say half of desktop height, close (or quit) Safari, re-open it, it auto increases height, repeat close/quit and open, the height keeps increasing itself until a value. then just manually increase height by mouse, just a little bit, repeat the same, it starts increasing height again until it reaches dock...

Unfortunately, I have yet to find a permanent solution to this issue. If you come across a possible fix, please update this thread.

I've never had that issue with Safari, so it's particular to systems (OS) experiencing it. I'd suggest trying a new User Account. If it goes away, move your files and trash the current/old account.

I tried creating a mock account and messing up with Safari and didn't come across this same issue. So maybe changing user accounts could be a way to fix it.

Could you care to explain in more details how to do so? I mean, I know how to create a new user account, but I don't really know how to transfer my files and configuration to it – or if that is even possible (rather than create a new account and then migrate the files manually?)

Best idea is to search at Apple's Support site for how to migrate to a new user account. I'm not going to try to list out all the steps, 'cause I might miss one or more.

Running macOS High Sierra 10.13.4 and don't have this issue either... try disabling any extensions you have enabled in Safari to see if that's causing the problem.

So just a quick update in case anyone stumbles upon this thread in the future:

Spend almost an hour with an Apple specialist over the phone trying to troubleshoot this issue to no avail. After trying several fixes (creating a new admin. account, etc.) we came to the conclusion that this was not caused by any particular Safari extension or other application on my Mac, but rather by having the "Show Tab Bar" option toggled.

When disabling this option, the issue seems to disappear. While this is not a long-term solution, as this is a rather minor –yet annoying– occurrence, I'd suggest to anyone facing this issue to simply disable the tab bar in order to avoid Safari's window autoresizing itself.

To those not facing this issue: could you try and toggle the tab bar to see if you experience something similar?

Apple specialist that I talked over the phone recommended reinstalling macOS to see if that could solve the issue. You could try that if you have some time to spear. If you do, please let us know if that fixed the issue.

yes 10.13.5 fixed this issue.

Yep, I can confirm that the last release (10.3.5) fixed this issue. Glad Apple was able to fix it even though they didn't acknowledge the bug previously.
