Safe to upgrade to GM and then opt out?

If you want the GM right away and cannot wait for the official version to be out, is it save enough to upgrade it through Public Beta and then opt out for the official version?
Do anyone has experience with the new file system format?

I tried to do the same, and apple now threatens to blow up my macbook pro! But I am courageous and I don't believe that they can this remotely. So just try and see what happens!
