SanDisk external SSD password protect: Use Disk Utility or use SanDisk's SecureAccess software?

And if I use either, can I password protect the drive without erasing data?

GET RID OF any "Sandisk software" on the drive.
Nuke it -- get it off of there.

Then, erase the drive with Disk Utility and start over...
