iPhone 8/Plus Screen staying on after notification

My Dad has an iPhone 8 and after he receives a notification, the screen stays on. This is ok, but he has a case that covers the screen and therefore doesn’t realise that the screen is on (he has the iPhone in silent mode). This drains the battery.

I know he could just turn on the sound, but it’s not always appropriate.

What I’m asking is why does the screen stay on after a notification and how does he change that please?

It normally doesn't do that. There isn't a fix to stop what's happening on that phone besides a restore.

We’ve got around it by setting the screen to go off from ‘Never’ to ‘30 seconds’.

Well my iPhone 10 is set to Never, but it still goes blank after a few seconds when it’s on the lock screen and I receive a notification.
